Today’s environmental, humanitarian and economic challenges require college graduates who are highly skilled in science, research, creative thought and problem solving.

Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Sciences nurtures these capabilities through 15 academic departments spanning the humanities, social sciences, and the mathematical and natural sciences. By cultivating students’ habits of inquiry, learning and service, the College of Arts and Sciences prepares young people to confidently address the unsolved problems of today and tomorrow.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 80 majors. Its faculty members are productive scholars as well as high-quality teachers, representing diverse educational backgrounds and professional expertise.

The college’s faculty and students apply university resources to improving citizens’ lives in the region, state and nation – including research projects on topics such as air quality, outreach to the public schools, and presentations and activities that engage the public.

Special projects

  • The Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies employs faculty who teach undergraduate courses in Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies, presents public lectures and a film series and leads study-abroad trips to Europe. Each summer, it presents an annual summer symposium featuring notable scholars and speakers.
