A student's scholarship leads to a career
Mary Jordan ’07 · Graduate Student, Library Science · Forest City, NC
As an undergraduate political science student, Mary Jordan enjoyed working at the university library so much, she decided to pursue a graduate degree in library science. “The best part of my experience at Appalachian was working in Belk Library,” she says. And when it came time to choose a graduate school, Mary says, “Appalachian just felt right again.”
Mary’s passion for library work was inspired not only by the library’s facilities but also its staff. “The library has so many available resources for students to help them succeed,” she says. “The staff go out of their way to help patrons and want the best of them. When you work here, you realize what is available at your fingertips.”
Mary received the first graduate student scholarship offered by the library for its student employees. “Receiving the scholarship was recognition that what I do really matters,” she says. “It feels so good to know that I am appreciated.”
Mary’s plans for the future include working at a public library or school library. Her advice for future students? “Try your best and be open for new experiences.”
